Annotation

Well-known as a—or the—pioneering Cubist of the Philippines, Vicente Manansala thought to develop the approach by layering his color surfaces to produce transparency through the layers. The technique has been called “Transparent Cubism” since. The technique has moreover proven to be meaningful in his expression of concern for underprivileged citizens. The transparency in his paintings, where different images are seen simultaneously, give them qualities appropriate to the content: it were as though the paintings are of a poverty of deep time and vast scope. While Mananasala, National Artist, was not associated with the social issues made striking by the succeeding generation with greater commitment to Social Realism, he is known for recognizing the state of existence of the rural poor—and particularly those who migrated to become the urban poor.
