Visions on Paper presents selected works by National Artists of the Philippines from the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ 21st Century Art Museum (21AM) Collection. Exploring quieter forms of abstraction, portraiture, and even rhythmic composition, the exhibition aims to illuminate the artist’s creative process through works on paper.
Beyond acting as a surface, paper can become a means for documenting an artist’s process and psyche. A self-portrait by poet and literary critic Jose Garcia Villa for example, captures a moment of vulnerability and spontaneity that isn’t often seen in his written work. A fan owned by the “Queen of Kundiman” Atang de la Rama with words inscribed by writer Amado Hernandez reveal the synergy between artists of differing creative practices. Print and mixed media works from the likes of visual artists Arturo Luz and Jose Joya offer viewers an opportunity to examine their works with an intimacy that cannot be captured by larger works on canvas.
Through this exhibition, viewers are invited to appreciate paper as a rich medium for artistic expression and documentation. Presenting translations of abstract thought to tangible form with some of the country’s most celebrated artists, Visions on Paper invites viewers to explore how this humble medium can be used as a platform for narratives on history, culture, and personal introspection.

Chronicles in Ink: Philippine Printmaking through the Decades aims to introduce the art of contemporary printmaking in the Philippines through selections from the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ 21st Century Art Museum (21AM) Collection. Spanning the 1950s to the 2010s, the works in this exhibition visualize the range of artistic expressions and how generations of Filipino artists have contributed to Philippine printmaking.
While selected prints from the CCP’s 21AM Collection serve as visual representations of the wide range of printmaking techniques, the exhibition documents the CCP’s long-standing collaborative relationship with the Philippine printmaking community. This is captured by several works from members of the Association of Pinoyprintmakers (formerly known as the Philippine Association of Printmakers), the CCP’s Associate Program for the visual arts.
Exploring themes from personal narratives to literary references and political commentary, the exhibition offers a small overview of how Filipino artists developed their practice of printmaking over the decades. The exhibition is a celebration of the rich, dynamic Philippine printmaking community, aiming to deepen viewers’ understanding of print as an artistic medium and a vehicle for social discourse.
