Annotation
Fernando Amorsolo is famous for his lyrical depictions of the sunny Philippine countryside with its greening rice fields and Filipino maidens. Amorsolo painted the grim memories of the war. Such a work is The Burning of Manila where his usual radiant sunlight gives way to a gloomy sky darkened by conflagration. This is another instance of backlighting, which is regarded as Amorsolo's greatest contribution to Philippine art.
